Hunton’s wood fiber insulation achieves fire test rating REI90

Published: August 29, 2024

Nativo® Wood Fiber Insulation from Hunton has achieved an impressive REI90 rating in a recent fire test conducted on an external wall construction at RISE Fire Research in Trondheim, Norway. With this result, the potential applications for wood fiber-based materials can be significantly expanded.

Earlier this summer, a fire test using Hunton’s wood fiber insulation in an external wall construction was conducted at RISE Fire Research in Trondheim. The wall was built with wooden cladding, the porous wood fiber board Hunton Winbproof as a wind barrier, Nativo Wood Fiber Insulation, Hunton Intello Vapor Barrier, battens, strapping, and standard gypsum board on the inside of the wall. The exterior of the wall was exposed to fire.

Hunton’s main raw material is spruce chips, a byproduct of the forestry industry. The chips come from sawmills around Gjøvik and are 100% PEFC certified.

Proves the enormous potential of wood fiber-based solutions
According to SINTEF’s Technical Approval, Nativo Wood Fiber Insulation is pre-approved for use in residential homes and cabins in fire class 1. With this new documentation, it will be easier for fire engineers and consultants to design fire safety measures for wood-based building materials.

The wall construction included:

  • 22×148 straight-edge cladding
  • 23×48 air gap battens
  • Hunton Windproof straight-edge, 25mm
  • Wooden studs with 2 x 100mm Nativo Wood Fiber Insulation boards
  • 48×48 cross battens insulated with 50mm Nativo Wood Fiber Insulation boards
  • Hunton Intello Vapor Barrier
  • 13mm standard gypsum board (+ one layer of fire-rated gypsum board GF15 provides REI90 with internal fire exposure)

Hunton Nativo® Wood Fiber Insulation fully installed in the wall.
